Runtime errors are some of the most common problems PC users face. Sometimes, we are greeted with a computer that will not do what we want and a cryptic error message that leaves plenty to the imagination. However, most of these errors are not a cause for serious alarm and can be corrected or prevented.

Here are a few strategies that might help:

• Stop programs which may be causing a conflict. Often runtime errors are a result of conflicts between different programs. To determine if this is the cause, close any other open programs one at a time by opening the Windows Task Manager box. If that does not correct the problem, then you may want to try a different solution.

• Check for patches or bug fixes. Another reason for these problems may be issues with the software itself. Often the manufacturer is already aware of these problems and has released downloads to correct them. Go to the manufacturer’s web site and search for these downloads. If none are available, then you may need another solution.

• Reinstall the program. When you have tried both of the fixes above, you may need to re install the offending program or your operating system completely. Make sure you back up the files you want to preserve which may end up being erased during the re installation.

You may also benefit from doing an Internet search for the specific Runtime Error that has occurred. For example, Runtime Error 7 means your system does not meet the minimum memory requirements for the program and Runtime Error 61 means that there is no available disk space for the program.

While dealing with Runtime Errors can be annoying and can hinder your ability to get work done effectively, you can also reduce the risks of some of these problems by taking actions to improve your system’s speed.

First, you should remove unneeded files from your hard drive, especially if you are worried about encountering problems like Runtime Error 61. Remember that almost everything you do on your computer is going to result in some saved file on your hard drive. If you do not get rid of these extra files periodically, you could end up bogging down your computer.

Second, you should defrag your hard drive regularly. When files are written onto your hard drive, they can end up being saved far from other related files. If you need to use the program, it can take a long time for those files to be pieced back together. Using your computer’s defragging tool moves those files around so that they are placed in more appropriate locations and can be accessed faster.

Finally, you should always keep your system free of spyware and viruses. These programs can run in the background and use up your RAM which can slow down your computer and even cause a freeze up. They can also lead to Runtime errors. Have updated anti spyware and anti virus programs installed at all times on your computer and make sure your software is updated weekly. Running scans to find problems and eliminating them from your computer can keep your system running well.

Remember that your computer will only perform well if you do a good job taking care of it, so practice regular maintenance and take action when errors occur.
