Entertaining is something that almost all adults have to do at one point or another. Some of us enjoy it while others feel it is a chore. We all want to be great hosts, whether it is for a dinner with friends or a party or a meal with a client or the boss. Preparation is the key to entertaining like a host extraordinaire. You need to pay attention to details and make it an event to remember for everyone who attends.
Select the Details to Match the Event
You need to make sure that the details of your event match the type of event you are planning. If you are planning a wedding with 200 guests, chances are you will not want to have it at your home. If you are planning a party to celebrate something important, you would be amiss to not include champagne. If you are planning a tailgating party, it is not the time for food that requires fork and knife. You need to carefully choose the location, the drinks, the food, the décor, the guest list and all the other details in between.
Plan to Have More than Enough
No matter what you plan to serve for food and drinks, make sure that you have more than enough for all your guests. If you are only serving beer and wine, buy enough beer for everyone to drink only beer or enough wine for everyone to drink only wine. You never know what your guests may choose to enjoy, so it’s better to be prepared. Nothing looks less pulled together than an event that runs out of food or drink.
Keep it Simple
If you are planning a formal dinner, you may only want to serve wine to keep things simple. A nice before dinner glass of wine can be followed by wine on the table that pairs well with the main meal. But again, keep it simple by offering 1 red and 1 white. Sometimes too many choices are overwhelming. Add a dessert wine to finish the meal.
If you are having friends in for a more casual affair a choice of a mixed cocktail or a nice glass of wine is just perfect. This gives your guests the chance to try something new or go with a sure thing. Be sure to have a couple of different wines on hand to account for different tastes.
Have the Necessary Tools
It is important to make sure that you have the tools you need to ensure your event goes smoothly. Have a wine opener on hand that is quick and easy to use. Make sure you have stemmed wineglasses if you are serving wine. Have ice on hand to chill white wine, beer or other drinks that need to be served cold. If you want a casual outdoor event, get a supply of disposable dishes and put out garbage cans on the edge of the action. Make a list ahead of time envisioning the party and you will have it all under control.
Entertaining like Martha is a simple matter of preparation and attention to detail. When you know what kind of party, what you are serving for food and drink and the tone you are going for, the hard part is done. The rest is simply making sure it gets done. Then relax and enjoy your event with your guests!
