Why Knowing Why Beats Knowing How

For many people planning an Internet business startup, the question of how to master the net is often emphasized to the detriment of Why . It is almost as if the Why were less important. Yet, knowing the reason why you want something is the essential prerequisite of any project. Why is about goals and motivation, how is about strategy and tactics.

To consider why you want to work from home on the Internet you need to think about what you want from your Internet business startup. I mean, what you really want; not what you tell other people you want!

If you ask someone to write out a list of things he really wants, it will most likely prove quite difficult. If you say, I want to get rich working from home on the Internet so that I can have a bigger car than my neighbor without having to work in a full time job, you will make many people to feel uncomfortable.

Nobody wants to seem greedy or idle, so most people try to come up with a weaker reason than their true motivation. Unfortunately, doing that allows your desires to become subject to the opinions of others. If that happens you are allowing your sense of self to be imposed from outside. In The 48 Laws of Power, Robert Greene writes:

Do not accept the roles that society foists on you. Recreate yourself by forging a new identity.

Unlike adults, children have no problems with their identity; nor do they feel the weight of society s expectations. They don t worry about what others may think about the things they want. All they know is that they want what they want!

Your list of wants is not an end in itself, however. You are trying to get to a strong why so that you know what it is that drives you to master the net and succeed with your Internet marketing startup idea.

Again, kids have the upper hand here. They ll be quick to point out that they want something because it would be fun to have and because it would also make them more popular with their friends! Ask adults why they want something and you ll see them searching for a reasonable justification. Why would you want to be rich? Why would you want to quit your job and sit at home trying to master the net? It may be that your initial Why is not the real why at all!

Exactly how you plan to achieve your goal is far less important, especially in the very early stages. Too much focus on the How early in the process can have destroy your ability to move forward. For example, if your finances are so bad that you find yourself in debt, achieving financial independence can seem virtually impossible. If you focus first on the How you might think that there is no way you can get out of your present poverty.

However true that may seem to you from where you stand today, it doesn t have to become your reality. To get from bust to riches you will have to negotiate some serious hurdles, and without a strong why that enables you to write the vision and make it plain you ll find it difficult to get up on your feet and do what it takes to get where you want to go. That reason needs to be strong enough to pull you through the tough times ahead.

That reason is your Why. To make your Why strong you need to build an inner conviction and what Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich calls a definiteness of purpose :

Back of all this demand for new and better things, there is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning DESIRE to possess it.

Working on your Why will help you achieve the definiteness of purpose that will improve the chance of reaching your goals. Focus on your Why. Find it, refine it, visualize it and repeat it to yourself over and over again. Make it so strong that achieving it becomes an absolute must for you and be assured that the How will reveal itself to you in the fullness of time.
